HOUR 2 AUDIO:
With a national trend towards improving and maintaining health, food growth and production has never been under more scrutiny. Films and books such as Food Inc., Fast Food Nation and Super Size Me have brought generous amounts of attention to the way in which our food is grown, prepared and treated. With more and more people turning to vegetarian, vegan and other “alternative” lifestyles, it is more important than ever that we understand what exactly can be claimed as “organic” and “local”, as laws and guidelines are still being defined.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Staninger welcomes two experts in the fields of organic food production. In the first hour, Josh Kirschenbaum of Territorial Seed Company of Cottage Grove, Oregon joins Dr. Hildy. Privately-held and family-owned since 1979, Territorial Seed Company delivers mail order seeds and plants thousands of varieties. Unique to Territorial Seed Company is their 44-acre trial grounds and organic research farm. Each year their research staff grows and evaluates thousands of varieties. Those available in their catalogs have been grown at their trial grounds and have passed stringent quality requirements. At Territorial, they pay close attention to how long it takes for vegetables such as corn and cauliflower to be ready for harvest. They seek out varieties that fill openings in days to maturity from a common planting date so that gardeners can be assured of having good tasting fresh-from-the-garden food all season long. Josh Kirschenbaum will discuss the planting of organic gardens and collection of seeds, timelines for early planting and how to be certain your garden is organic and also procedures for saving seeds for next year’s crop.
In the second hour, Dr. Staninger is joined by Sean Herbert, Owner of Got Sprouts?. Based near West Palm Beach, Florida, Got Sprouts? also sells organic seeds and plants through mail delivery, specializing in sprouts and wheatgrass, or “sweetgrass” as they like to call it! Before they started Got Sprouts?, Sean’s wife Jody was diagnosed with cancer. In the middle of her chemotherapy treatment, she walked out, determined to find a better way to fight the disease. Her efforts led her to the Hippocrates Health Institute, a world-renowned alternative health and teaching facility based in the belief that given the right tools, our bodies can heal themselves. Hippocrates enlightened them to the many healing attributes of sprouts, and exposed them to products and services to aid in their quest for improved health. It was after they started to grow organic sprouts for personal use that the Herberts realized their mission to share the benefits of sprouting with others, and opened Got Sprouts growing the plants in an 18,000 sq ft warehouse facility, using a combination of natural and full spectrum lighting. They now deliver plants and seeds to homes all over Palm Beach county and fresh-cut sprouts anywhere in the US!
Join Dr. Staninger and her guests this week as they discuss the cultivation of organic seeds and the benefits of organic farming and sprouting of seeds on One Cell One Light Radio!
