Did you ever hear the song Nancy Sinatra sang “These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do…” because none of us realized when we heard that song that our boots (shoes) would contain a self-charging battery that generated and stored energy as a renewable energy technology?
Renewable energy technologies generally consist of two distinct processes: energy generating (using sources such as coal, solar, wind, etc.) and energy storage (such as batteries).
Georgia Tech researcher Zhong Lin Wang holds the components of a new self-charging power cell that uses piezoelectric materials to directly convert mechanical energy to chemical energy. The chemical energy can be released as electricity.
These two processes are always accomplished through two separate units, with the first process converting the original form of energy to electricity, and the second process converting electricity to chemical energy. Now for the first time, research engineers, Xinyu Xue, Sihong Wang, Wenxi Guo, Yan Zhang, and Zhong Lin Wang from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, have combined the energy generation and storage in a single unit as published in Nano Letters August 2012.
“This is a project that introduces a new approach in battery technology is a fundamentally new in science,” Zhong Lin Wang told Phys.org. “The self-charging power cell is made from nano piezoelectric material PVDF that replaces the conventional separator materials and acts as a nanogenerator inside a Li-ion battery.”
Professor Zhong Lin Wang has been among the earlier pioneer of developing advanced nano materials and merging these technologies into many inventions that will be soon in the consumer market place, not the least of which are Tube-Shaped Solar Cells which Could Be Woven Into Clothing – (see link below.)
