HOUR 1 –     HOUR 2

Of all the glands that should be part of your daily thoughts, the thyroid is the most important. The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. But there is a growing problem amongst people, one that threatens the well-being of the thyroid and perhaps life itself.

This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy will host a special discussion on the growing number of patients with thyroid disease and what this epidemic might mean.

It is estimated that over 200 million people globally (about 35 million people in North America) suffer from at least one of the many forms of thyroid disease. The incidence of thyroid illness occurs about seven times more frequently in women than men, and it is thought that at least 50% of the cases are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. There is also a

dramatic increase in the rates of thyroid cancer, which is the fastest growing cancer in North America today. In 2010, the American Cancer Society reported 45,000 new cases. They now predict that in 2013 there will be about 60,220 new cases of thyroid cancer, and this number is expected to grow rapidly in the next decade.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland situated in the neck and wrapped around the windpipe located just below the Adam’s apple. It controls metabolism and virtually every aspect of health including weight, mood, energy, and circulation. Damage to the thyroid can lead to underactivity, overactivity, thyroid inflammation, and thyroid cancer, among many other health problems.

Causes of thyroid gland damage include radiation exposure – increased since the March 2011 tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Nuclear Plant in Japan, over consumption of soy, high doses of lithium, iodine deficiency or excess, the over consumption of thyroid toxic foods, gluten, stress, pregnancy, and root canals.

Open with the Chemically-induced injury of the parathyroid gland:  pathophysiology and mechanistic considerations that set one up for thyroid gland interactions and dysfunction.

1)  Normal development and function

2)  Biosynthesis of Parathyroid hormone by chief Cells (Chief Cell:  Oxyphil Cell and Atrophic Chief Cell and Water-Clear Cells)

3) Control of Parathyroid Hormone Secretion  (immunorectine parathyroid hormone (IPTH) and ethylenedimamintetracetic acid (EDTA)

4)  Target cells in Bone- Biologic Action in Kidney

5) Age related changes in parathyroid structure and function

6)  Developmental disturbancesLParathyroid cysts) embryonic

7)  Xenobiotic induced toxic injury of parathyroids:  Ozone, aluminum, excess vitamin D and metabolites, salanum malaxoxylon intoxication (plants livestock grazing on)., L-Asparaginase, fluoride, irradiaton and parathyroid hormone-related protein.

8)  Role in Cancer-Associated Hypercalcemia

Parathiroid hormone protein actions:

Normal/Endocrine:  Fetal parathyroid glands, placenta

Normal/Paracrine:  skin, mammary gland, endocrine organs, muscle, lymphoid organs, kidney, bone, brain

Abnormal/Endocrine:  humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy

1) The characterization and function of the thyroid gland (Goiter, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone transport and metabolism)
2)  Thyroid follicule cells and examples of chemicals effecting (which inhibit peroxidases)

Thionamides:  barbituric acid, carbinmazol, ethylene thiourea, imidazole, methimazole,  Oxazole, propylhiouracil, thiouracil, thiourea, thiadiazole, uracil

Aromatic Amines:  Amphenone, oxydianiline, p-aminobenzoic acid,
p-aminosalicylic-acid, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfanomides

Substituted phenols:  4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, hexyrescorcinol, meta-aminophenol,     resorcinol

     Other:  Aminotriazole, antipyrine, thiamozole, tricyanoaminopropene

3)  Inhibition of Oxidizing Enzyme (inhibited by thiouracil and imiazole derivatives.

4) Coupling of Tyrosine to Iodine

5) Extra thyroidal effects (endocrine organs)

6)  Enzyme Inducers (found in Vermiizymes):  P450; p-488

Iodine Deficiency At Home Self Test:
Purchase a USP Tincture of Iodine from your local drugstore. Use a cotton ball to absorb some iodine from the tincture.

Rub about the size of a silver dollar of iodine on your upper inner arm midway between the bicep and tricep muscle. Note the time of application.

If the brownish/orange color disappears within 2-4 hours after application you are extremely deficient and could use supplementation. If you are not deficient in iodine then the circle should remain slightly orange 24 hours later.
