Amalgam creatures have long been a part of cultural traditions. Usually in the form of mythological hybrids, creatures such as mermaids, griffins, centaurs, chimeras, and others have tantalized the imagination. Frightening and majestic combinations, sometimes with supernatural abilities, wove through oral and written tradition, and today are a common part of fantastical fiction in all forms. But what if there were such creatures in real life? Would we have the same reverence for them, or consider them abominations to be studied or worse, destroyed?

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy discusses the phenomenon behind “winged cats” – cats with wing-like appendages. But the unusual animal investigation doesn’t stop there. Also discussed will be the Ayam Cemani chicken of Indonesia, a rare breed whose entire body is black. Not just feathers, but head, beak, eyes, legs and even the insides.

So what has caused this phenomenon? One explanation is mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward.

Are the winged cats and black chickens example of evolution taking this leap? Or has evolution been given a boost through genetic modification? Oxitec, a British biotech company, plans to release an experimental mosquito population in the Florida Keys genetically engineered to combat dengue fever. Local residents are concerned for a number of reasons, such as the lack of testing done, and the sudden introduction of a non-native species into the local population.

Are mosquitoes just the tip of the iceberg? According to some accounts, genetically modified “micro humans” could be used in scientific testing within two years. Although the dangers of genetically engineered humans should be obvious, the benefits could outweigh the cost if there is the possibility of eradicating diseases and potentially find a cure for the greatest disease of all: aging and death.

Join Dr. Hildy this week as she discusses mutations and genetics on One Cell One Light Radio!
