We Must Fight The Invasion Of The Killer Robots (The Morality of Autonomous Weapons) – by Louis A. Del Monte
1/26/19: Barnes & Nobel book signing at 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the B&N store in the Ridgehaven Mall, Minnetonka, MN
On August 29th, 1997, three billion human lives ended on what became known as Judgment Day. The survivors lived only to face a new nightmare: the war against the machines.
This, of course, never happened in our reality, but is the main plot of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the highly successful film predicated on one idea: artificial intelligence would one day recognize humanity as its enemy, and seek to destroy it. Though these movies are obvious fiction, the theme behind them lives on: how will the future of warfare look if we remove the human element?
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest, Louis A. Del Monte, award-winning physicist, inventor, futurist, bestselling author, featured speaker, CEO of Del Monte and Associates, Inc., and high-profile media personality, to discuss his newly published book, Genius Weapons .
For over thirty years, Del Monte was a leader in the development of microelectronics, integrated circuit sensors, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for IBM and Honeywell. His patents and technology developments are currently used by Honeywell, IBM, and Samsung.
Artificial intelligence is playing an ever-increasing role in military weapon systems. Going beyond the bomb-carrying drones used in the Afghan war, the Pentagon is now in a race with China and Russia to develop “lethal autonomous weapon systems” (LAWS). In this eye-opening overview, Mr. Del Monte examines the advantages and potential threats to humanity resulting from the deployment of completely autonomous weapons systems. Stressing the likelihood that these weapons will be available in the coming decades, the author raises key questions about how the world will be impacted.
Though the benefits are enormous when considering the human cost of warfare, it is imperative that the potential for automated control of our defense be examined at all times. It is not far-fetched to believe artificially intelligent computers could mis-identify a target, and set in motion a chain of events that could bring about large-scale global warfare or even the end of humanity as we know it.
Join Dr. Hildy and her guest this week as they discuss autonomous weaponry on One Cell One Light Radio!

New Book Reveals Arms Race for Genius Weapons and Their Threat to Humanity
About the Author –
Genius Weapons: Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Weaponry,
and the Future of Warfare
Louis A. Del Monte is an award-winning physicist, inventor, futurist, featured speaker, CEO of Del Monte and Associates, Inc., and high profile media personality. For over thirty years, he was a leader in the development of microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for IBM and Honeywell. His patents and technology developments, currently used by Honeywell, IBM, and Samsung, are fundamental to the fabrication of integrated circuits and sensors. As a Honeywell Executive Director from 1982 to 2001, he led hundreds of physicists, engineers, and technology professionals engaged in integrated circuit and sensor technology development for both Department of Defense (DOD) and commercial applications. He is literally a man whose career has changed the way we work, play, and make war. Del Monte is the recipient of the H.W. Sweatt Award for scientific engineering achievement and the Lund Award for management excellence. He is the author of Nanoweapons, The Artificial Intelligence Revolution, How to Time Travel, and Unravelling the Universe’s Mysteries. He has been quoted or has published articles in the Huffington Post, the Atlantic, Business Insider, American Security Today, Inc., and on CNBC.
“A highly readable and deeply researched exploration of one of the most chilling aspects of the development of artificial intelligence: the creation of intelligent, autonomous killing machines. In Louis A. Del Monte’s view, the multibillion dollar arms industry and longstanding rivalries among nations make the creation of autonomous weapons extremely likely. We must resist the allure of genius weapons, Del Monte argues, because they will almost inevitably lead to our extinction.”
—James Barrat, author of Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era
“For the second time in history, humanity is on the verge of creating weapons that might wipe us out entirely. Will we have the wisdom not to use them? No one can say, but this book will give you the facts you need to think about the issue intelligently.”
—J. Storrs Hall, author of Beyond AI: Creating the Conscience of the Machine
“This thought-provoking read provides insight into future world weapons scenarios we may face as technology rapidly advances. A call to arms for humanity, this book details the risks if we do not safeguard technology and weapon development.”
—Carl Hedberg, semiconductor sales and manufacturing management for thirty-seven years at Honeywell, Inc.
“In Genius Weapons, Del Monte provides a thorough and well-researched review of the history and development of ‘smart weapons’ and artificial intelligence. Then, using his background and imagination, he paints a very frightening picture of our possible future as these technologies converge. He challenges our understanding of warfare and outlines the surprising threat to mankind that may transpire in the not-too-distant future.”
—Anthony Hickl, PhD in materials science and former director of Project and Portfolio Management for New Products at Cargill
“We are already living the next war, which is increasingly being fought with the developing weapons that Del Monte writes about so engagingly.”
—Istvan Hargittai, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, author of Judging Edward Teller
“Del Monte explores a fascinating topic, which is of great importance to the world as the implementation of AI continues to grow. He points out the many applications of AI that can help humanity improve nearly every aspect of our lives—in medicine, business, finance, marketing, manufacturing, education, etc. He also raises important ethical concerns that arise with the use of AI in weapons systems and warfare. The book examines the difficulty of controlling these systems as they become more and more intelligent, someday becoming smarter than humans.”
—Edward Albers, retired semiconductor executive at Honeywell Analytics

HOUR 2 –
Despite our ever-shrinking world, it’s always hard to imagine how much smaller things can get. Computers which once took up entire rooms now fit in our pocket. Libraries now fit on a device you can take with you anywhere. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. As tech moves forward, it gets smaller, and the future is nano.
This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guests – Artist Rick Dubov and Film Producer/Director Veronica Hendricks to discuss updates in the advancement of nanotechnology – cellular-level tech that is changing our world.
Nanotech is already in full swing in our world. The most common current use is in coatings – substances you can spray on clothing to repel water, or to help an item repel sunlight to stop fading. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
One of the predicted uses of nano is in biotech. Nano sensors could one day enter the bloodstream and provide real-time analysis of your physical health. Instead of drawing blood and having it analyzed at a lab, you could get the results instantaneously. Work is already being done on synthetic cells – ones created in a lab but potentially used in a variety of ways, including genetic modification, fertilization, and more.
Nano isn’t the only area of tech that is rapidly growing. With advancements in virtual reality, the possibility of creating experiences that feel real to the user are endless. Imagine being able to see the world from the perspective of someone different than you. Imagine how you might feel about race if you could live life for a day as someone who is not like you. Or imagine learning surgery without cutting open a body.
Join Dr. Hildy and her guests this week as they talk about advancements in nano and other technologies on One Cell One Light Radio!

Researchers develop medical device that dissolves in the body –
Northwestern University and Washington University School of Medicine researchers have developed the first example of a bioelectronic medicine: an implantable, biodegradable wireless device that speeds nerve regeneration and improves healing of a damaged nerve. Their device delivered pulses of electricity to damaged nerves in rats after a surgical repair process, accelerating the regrowth of nerves and enhancing the recovery of muscle strength and control. The device is the size of a dime and the thickness of a sheet of paper and dissolves in the body after about two weeks.

This Horrifying ‘Slaughterbot’ Video Is The Best Warning Against Autonomous Weapons – Facial Recognition DAVID NIELD – 22 NOV 2017
We’re on the verge of creating autonomous weapons that can kill without any help from humans. Thousands of experts are concerned about this – and the latest campaign effort against this tech is a chilling video demonstrating the kind of future we’re heading for.
In the short, which we’ve embedded below, swarms of AI-controlled drones carry out strikes on thousands of unprepared victims with targeted precision. What makes the clip so scary is that the scenario is entirely plausible. The video starts with a spectacular press event where the technology is unveiled for the first time. The miniature drones are able to take out “the bad guys” – whoever they happen to be – without any collateral damage, nuclear weapons, or troops on the ground.
All the drone bots need is a profile: age, sex, fitness, uniform, and ethnicity.
Evacuated after ‘health attacks’ in Cuba and China, diplomats face new ordeals in U.S.
Some diplomats and their doctors tell NBC they’re concerned the U.S. wants to downplay what happened. Some suspect harassment has continued inside the U.S.
EXCERPT: “Cuba and China deny any role. While the U.S. hasn’t named a culprit, it says the “health attacks” caused brain injury and other physical harm. Physicians enlisted by the State Department have identified what they call a “Brain Network Disorder” acquired by U.S. personnel serving abroad, say U.S. officials, that includes structural changes to the brain not found in any previously known disorder.”

One of the most amazing technological marvels of the last decade is the invention of the 3D printer. For decades, computer printing was limited to a flat, two-dimensional surface. The idea that you would be able to create virtually any item in your own home was a dream of the future straight out of Star Trek or The Jetsons. However, with the availability of increased scanning technology, and the ability to share specs via the internet, 3D printing is increasingly becoming commonplace, as the price of these machines decrease as more and more people embrace the technology. Three-dimensional printers are now being used to create tools, art, medical supplies, and even monsters.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes Justice Joseph, Art Director of Ironklad Studios, a Los Angeles-based collective of creatives specializing in creating entire worlds for all formats of entertainment including features, games, advertising, cartoons, VFX and toys. Their team offers a diverse range of talents and skill sets, helping to form the building blocks of a project from initial concept to release date.
In the first hour hour of the show, Justice and Dr. Hildy will discuss Ironklad Studios and their role in creating worlds in entertainment. Ironklad has done work on such films as the iconic creature work for Goosebumps, the visual language and look development Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and creature and look development for Disney’s Maleficent. As Art Director, Justice is directly responsible for the visual aspect of their work, and his conversation with Dr. Hildy will focus on Ironklad’s increased use of 3D printing as a tool to help them visualize work for their clients.
In the second hour of the show, Dr. Hildy and Justice will return for a discussion on the advancing role of 3D printing in the medical field.
