LEGIONELLA Bacteria: The Cause of Legionellosis,
Legionnaires’ Disease and Pontiac Fever
(2:00-4:00pm Mountain; 3:00-5:00pm Central; 4:00-6:00pm Eastern)
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, returning guest Veronica Hendricks joins Dr. Hildy in the next in a series of discussions relating to the man-made disasters currently ongoing in our nation.
Our attention next turns to the potential danger of Legionnaires’ disease. Also known as legionellosis or Legion fever, Legionnaires’ disease is a form of atypical pneumonia caused by any type of Legionella bacteria. Legionnaires has a wide variety of symptoms: almost all with Legionnaires’ disease experience fever, while approximately half have cough with sputum, and 1/3 cough up blood or bloody sputum. Other symptoms include muscle aches, headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, loss of coordination, chest pain, or diarrhea and vomiting. Up to half of those with Legionnaires have gastrointestinal symptoms, and almost half have neurological symptoms, including confusion and impaired cognition.
Exposure to the Legionella bacteria is of great concern in stagnant water. At low levels of contamination, the chance of getting Legionnaires’ disease from a water source is very slight. The problem arises when high concentrations of the organism grow in water systems. Water heaters, cooling towers, and warm, stagnant water can provide ideal conditions for the growth of the organism.

With much in the news about the Porter Ranch gas leak in Southern California, special attention should be paid to the potential toxicity of methane gas exposure. This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy aims to do just that.
Joined by returning guest, Film Producer Veronica Hendricks, Dr. Hildy will outline how exposure to methane is of great concern, for its use as an odorant gas with propane in piped-in gases or container gas to a home or apartment where it will decompose into carbon monoxide and other compounds.

In the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, Julia Roberts plays the titular, real-life legal assistant who nearly single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city’s water supply. Although actress Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her performance, these types of cases are not only real, but also prevalent and common. Known as “toxic torts”, they are increasingly common, as more and more negative side effects from long-term exposure to chemicals are discovered and those in charge are held responsible.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes her guest, physician, attorney, industrial hygienist, industrial toxicologist and biomedical engineer Ernest P. Chiodo, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.B.A., C.I.H. to discuss these types of cases and more.
Dr. Chiodo’s law practice has included service as a trial attorney in toxic tort and environmental litigiation, and he has written a book on the subject, Toxic Tort: Ernest P. Chiodo: Amazon.com: Books.
Determination of causation of occupational and environmental disease requires knowledge of medicine, epidemiology, toxicology, biostatistics, industrial hygiene, public health, and biomedical engineering. Dr. Chiodo has formal education and board certifications documenting his expertise in all of these disciplines. In addition, as a practicing attorney, he has knowledge of evidentiary rules including the Federal Daubert Rules for admission of expert testimony.
People are typically exposed to toxic chemicals from pharmaceuticals, from consumer products, from the environment, in the home, and at work. Most toxic tort cases arise either from exposure to pharmaceutical drugs or occupational exposures. There have also been many occupational toxic tort cases, because industrial and other workers are often chronically exposed to toxic chemicals. Most of the law in this area arises from asbestos exposure. However, thousands of toxic chemicals are used in industry and workers in these areas can experience a variety of toxic injuries.
Join Dr. Hildy and her guest this week as they discuss toxic tort cases, their causes, and what you can do to protect yourself on One Cell One Light Radio!

Toxic Tort: Ernest P. Chiodo: Amazon.com: Books
When your legal concern involves dangerous toxins and pesticides, you want to know exactly what you are dealing with. Attorney and physician Dr. Ernest Chiodo has outlined these concerns in his book, Toxic Tort: Medical and Legal Elements.
This is what former Chairman of the environmental law section of the State Bar of Michigan, Donnelly W. Hadden had to say about the book:
“Dr. Chiodo provides within this book gems of researched law and accepted science polished with the grit of practical courtroom experience. If you do any toxic tort litigation, this book will soon become dog-eared and full of underlined passages. You will always keep it near.”
