Despite our ever-shrinking world, it’s always hard to imagine how much smaller things can get. Computers which once took up entire rooms now fit in our pocket. Libraries now fit on a device you can take with you anywhere. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. As tech moves forward, it gets smaller, and the future is nano.
This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guests – Artist Rick Dubov and Film Producer/Director Veronica Hendricks to discuss updates in the advancement of nanotechnology – cellular-level tech that is changing our world.
Nanotech is already in full swing in our world. The most common current use is in coatings – substances you can spray on clothing to repel water, or to help an item repel sunlight to stop fading. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
One of the predicted uses of nano is in biotech. Nano sensors could one day enter the bloodstream and provide real-time analysis of your physical health. Instead of drawing blood and having it analyzed at a lab, you could get the results instantaneously. Work is already being done on synthetic cells – ones created in a lab but potentially used in a variety of ways, including genetic modification, fertilization, and more.
Nano isn’t the only area of tech that is rapidly growing. With advancements in virtual reality, the possibility of creating experiences that feel real to the user are endless. Imagine being able to see the world from the perspective of someone different than you. Imagine how you might feel about race if you could live life for a day as someone who is not like you. Or imagine learning surgery without cutting open a body.

Northwestern University and Washington University School of Medicine researchers have developed the first example of a bioelectronic medicine: an implantable, biodegradable wireless device that speeds nerve regeneration and improves healing of a damaged nerve. Their device delivered pulses of electricity to damaged nerves in rats after a surgical repair process, accelerating the regrowth of nerves and enhancing the recovery of muscle strength and control. What makes the clip so scary is that the scenario is entirely plausible. The video starts with a spectacular press event where the technology is unveiled for the first time. New research forecasts future life expectancies in 195 countries and territories around the world, and the results for the United States are pretty grim. In 2016, the U.S. ranked 43rd in the world, with an average lifespan of 78.7 years. By 2040, Americans’ life expectancy is forecast to increase, but only by 1.1 years to 79.8. This causes the U.S. to plummet in rank to 64th. The study, published in the international medical journal The Lancet, offers unique new insights into the health statuses of nations worldwide.

Now that the Vernal Equinox has awakened life from its winter slumber, with it comes the Easter holiday, the celebration in Christianity of the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death. Jesus’ reappearance after his crucifixion is one of the most important events in Christian theology, so it is no surprise that this day is almost as widely celebrated as Christmas. Despite the pastel colors, baskets of gifts and candy, egg hunts and other secular traditions that surround the holiday, the religious aspect still reigns supreme. And though Easter doesn’t have nearly the soundtrack as Christmas, there are still a number of songs about Easter that aren’t “Peter Cottontail”.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest, Film Producer Veronica Hendricks, for a discussion of inspirational songs that tell of the coming of Jesus Christ. While there are an untold number of spiritual and gospel numbers on this subject, secular versions can be a little harder to find.
One of the first that comes to mind is “The Man Comes Around” by Johnny Cash. One of the last songs Cash wrote before his death, the song contains many numerous Biblical references, especially to the Book of Revelation. A spoken portion from Revelation 6:1–2 in the King James Version introduces the song: “And I heard, as it were, the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying,’Come and see.’ and I saw, and behold a white horse”. This portion of Scripture describes the coming of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, each heralded by one of the “four beasts” first mentioned in Revelation 4:6–9. The musical portion then begins with Cash reciting that a man will one day come to pass judgment. The chorus indicates that these events will be accompanied by trumpets, pipers, and “one hundred million angels singing”. The song also alludes to the Parable of the Ten Virgins from the Gospel of Matthew (25:1–13) with the lyrics “The virgins are all trimming their wicks,” a reference to the virgins’ preparation of the Second Coming of Christ.
Though Cash wrote and recorded this song towards the end of his life, there are many of his contemporaries in the 1950s and 1960s that also sang about this subject. Nat King Cole’s “Easter Sunday Morning” was written and recorded for his 1960 album Every Time I Feel the Spirit, an album recorded in his hometown of Chicago with a local church choir. Elvis Presley in 1971 recorded one of the thousands of versions of “Amazing Grace”, in the U.S. Library of Congress.

According to Tim, there’s been a distinct disturbance in the field of cosmic energies of late, to which most denizens of planet Earth can attest. Rick Dubov has been working on creating for individuals special custom portal paintings that not only allow one to align to ONE self but to their “ancient ancestors” thousands of years ago. One needs to view the portal – a gateway to the other dimensional worlds and bring it forward, so their cosmic blessings will be received. Not only from beyond your first ancestor in this world, but from all of the cosmos that made the one single ancestor on this planet we call Earth to you as his/her last representative.
Mr. Dubov’s portals are a way of making dreams real. Each portal is done on a relatively small scale, either 9×12 inches or 11×14 inches, on
canvas board in oil paint. Color is important and Mr. Dubov makes deliberate decisions on the use of color, but since each is unique, there is no representative chart or scale. In face, shape and movement in his brushwork is just as important as color. The portals are “intuitive, but accurate” for each person; they’re semi-figurative, mostly abstract and have the presence of the person they are made for and their needs. The portals’ purpose is to awaken something in you. While some are bold assertions, others are more demure, but each is unique to their subject’s personality, essence and needs and desires in their life. Additionally, Mr. Dubov’s portals are not necessarily in the shape of windows or doors, but can take on any number of forms, from the concrete to the abstract.
